Kisamos (Kastelli Kissamos)

Information about Kisamos (Kastelli Kissamos)

Kisamos (Kastelli) is a largish town in the North West of Crete with a long sandy beach in front of the town.

The beach is framed by many tamarisk trees. It can be affected by the Summer North winds. The beach has facilities for swimming, sunbathing and sea sports. The beach is easily accessible from the town.

Accommodation is available.

While Kastelli Kisamos has plenty of facilities to cater for visitors, it is not over developed and still relies on its traditional agricultural industries of wine and oil production.

Kissamos harbour is on the outskirts of the town.

History

Kissamos existed in pre Hellenic times as one of the ports of the ancient Dorian city of Polyrinia. At this time, as an important port, it would have been at the commercial centre of Western Crete. The ruins of the ancient city are 7 kilometres away to the South.

Kissamos continued to prosper into the Roman and Byzantine periods. It became the Seat of a Bishop.

A wealthy city often under attack, Kissamos was protected by fortifications. The parts of the wall which can still be seen standing today are from the Venetian period. The Venetian Castello gave the town its alternative name, Kastelli. It is often referred to as Kastelli Kissamos (Kissamou) to differentiate it from the many other towns in Crete named Kastelli.

Location:
41 kilometres West of Chania. There is a public bus service running regularly between Chania and Kissamos. You can also arrive by ferry from Gythion in the Peloponnese and Kythira.
