Lasithi Area

Information about Lasithi Area

The prefecture or province of Lasithi (Λασίθι) stretches across Crete from the north to south coasts and borders the prefecture of Heraklion to the west.

The capital of the area is Agios Nikolaos. It is situated on the north coast.

The Nomos Lasithiou, as it is sometimes written contains 8 municipal districts across 4 provinces. The municipal districts are: Agios Nikolaos; Ierapetra; Itanos; Lefki; Makrys Gialos; Neapoli; Oropedio Lasithiou and Sitia.

The provinces are: Mirambelos; Lasithi; Ierapetra and Sitia.

Beaches and Resorts
The districts contain some of Crete's most famous resorts including Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. In addition to these very well known coastal resorts, the area also boasts a wealth of isolated locations including beaches such as Vai, Chrissi Island and Itanos.

Monasteries and Byzantine Churches
Historic monasteries such as the Toplou Monastery, Monastery of George Selinari and Moni Kapsa. The famous Byzantine Church of Panagia Kera at Kritsa contains ancient frescoes dating from the 13th Century.

Villages
Mountain villages such as Tzermiado, Psychro and Meso Potami, where life continues in traditional ways and where local products are available from roadside stalls.

Caves and Gorges
Caves and gorges including the Dikteon (Diktean) Cave, famous for its association with Zeus and the Pefki Gorge, the Gorge of Moni Kapsa and the Butterfly Gorge, so named for the abundance of butterflies which live there.

Geology
A wealth of geological interest including the Dikti Mountains and the largest plateau on Crete known as the Lasithi Plateau.

Archaeology
Archaeological sites such as Zakros Palace, Lato, Gournia and Itanos.
The quantity of archaelogical sites in Lasithi are an indication of its importance since prehistoric times.

History
The famous island of Spinalonga, former fortress and leper colony, stands opposite Plaka, it is a fascinating site viewable from the road and reached by boat from towns in the vicinity.
