Agia Paraskevi Church, AsomatonInformation about Agia Paraskevi Church, Asomaton

Agia Paraskevi Church, a tiny cruciform Byzantine church with a cupola (dome).
Aghia Paraskevi contains frescoes dating from the 13th century and an interesting tomb with three figures above is built into its southern wall. The three figures are believed to be Christ blessing two people who are shown in a praying position. One of the figures is believed to be a representation of Georgios Hortatsis, the famous Cretan poet and author of the literary work, Erofil. Another of the figures is thought to be his wife.
The Hortatsis(Chortatzis) family were a prominent family of Crete in the 13th century. Another of the frescoes depicts a scene in which a man on horseback wearing military uniform is saying goodbye to a women. It is possible that this shows Hortatsis leaving his home for the military campaign against the Venetians. The name of Georgios Chortatzis is shown on an inscription on the fresco.
The church stands in a copse of trees and can be seen from the road. It was carefully renovated in 1888 to retain its charm and authenticity. The church is usually open to visitors during the day.
Location:
Near Asomaton in the Amari Valley in the Municipality of Syvritos (Timos Syvritou) (Δήμος Συβρίτου). It stands a short distance from the minor road between the Asomaton School and Thronos.
