AlmiridaInformation about Almirida
Almyrida ( )has grown from a fishing village to a popular tourist resort with a popular sandy beach.
The town and its surroundings are very popular with European Nationals from outside Greece, many of whom have bought property here or who have retired here.
The ruins of a 6th century Christian Basilica have been discovered at the edge of the village - three mosaics, all of which are excellent examples and in an excellent state of preservation. The area also shows signs of Roman occupation. The remains of a Greek-Roman settlement have been found on Finikias Hill above the Basilica and on the islet of Karga, close to Almirida.
Almirida Beach has Blue Flag status. It is 350 metres long and 20 metres wide. The beach can get very busy during the Summer months, especially during weekends. If you prefer quiet then visit during the week. Facilities for sunbathing, swimming and sea sports. Access for people with disabailities.
The beach is sheltered from the Summer North winds. The town has plenty of facilities for eating and drinking and a wide range of accommodation is available.
The area has an interesting flora and fauna with Eucalyptus, Palms, Pines, Poppies, Sea Lilies; Monk Seals can be seen along the coast and various birds of prey are frequently seen playing with the thermals.
The Municipality has an environmental educational programme including conferences, seminars and environment/cultural activities.
The area has a Health Centre.
Location:
Located 22 kilometres from Chania in the Municipality of Vamos, it can be accessed by public bus service.
