MalemeInformation about Maleme
Maleme is a small resort in the Chania area.
There is a range of accommodation available and places to eat and drink.
Facilities for swimming and sunbathing are available.
Maleme can be affected by the north winds in Summer.
History
Maleme is well known as a location where German paratroopers landed during the Battle of Crete in 1941. A German plane is submerged a short distance from the coast here.
Nature and Environment
The Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) breeds on Maleme Beach, burying their eggs in its soft sand. The environmental organisation, Archelon, in conjunction with a local hotel, organizes educational seminars for their guests which provide information and photographs, helping visitors to understand the life-cycle of the turtles and how to use the beach responsibly during the turtles' breeding season.
Other environmental initiatives include regular beach cleaning events.
Location:
Maleme Beach is located 16km west of Chania. It can be reached by regular public bus service or by your own transport.
