Prasano Gorge is an impressive ravine (canyon) which is within easy reach of Rethymno, Platanias and Prases(Πρασές).
The gorge begins just outside the picturesque, traditional village of Prases (Πρασές) and extends to the outskirts of the village of Platanias on the North coast.
The high, sheer rocky sides of the Prasano Gorge provide an ideal habitat for rare flora and birds.
The gorge can take up to 5 hours to walk depending on your fitness and pace. Avoid walking the gorge during the Winter when the river is full of water. You should wait until the riverbed has dried up before passing through this gorge and traverse it only when the weather is stable. If heavy rain is expected do not walk it as rainwater can suddenly flood the gorge.
The photographs show the southern end of the gorge, the preferred starting point for walking for most people.
In the vicinity of the gorge near its southern end is the Prases Bridge (Γέφυρα Πρασών), a multi-arched bridge on tall pillars and near to its northern end at Platanias is a bridge dating from the Venetian period (Γέφυρα Πλατανιά).
