RethymnoInformation about Rethymno

Rethymno (Ρέθυμνο) situated on the north coast of Crete, is the capital of Rethymno Prefecture and the third largest town on Crete.
The town is a fascinating combination of the ancient and modern, maintaining its historical identity with its Venetian Harbour and Fortezza clustered around the harbour area with the'Old Town' extending outwards through its maze of tiny streets and alley ways to the new town behind.
The coastal strip towards the Venetian Harbour is a popular holiday area with a long sandy beach which extends all the way to Platanias and other local resorts.
Rethymno offers an excellent range of accommodation both adjacent to its fine beach and within the old and new town, with many hotels and apartments available all year round.

History
Rethymno has been a place of settlement since the late Minoan period (1350 - 1100 BC and evidence of human activity from the earlier Neolithic period have also been found here.
Known as Rithymna, the ancient town developed during the Classical period (470-323 BC) but then fell into decline, losing its prosperity until in 1204 AD Crete fell to Venetian domination. Due to its strategic geographical position, Crete was very important to the Venetian Empire. The Venetian merchants had trade routes with the Peloponnese, the islands of the Aegean, Arab countries and India, with Crete ideally situated as a staging point for their ships.
Many of Rethymno's famous monuments were built during this period, including the fortress and defensive walls were constructed to protect the thriving town from Turkish and Algerian pirates.
Crete saw massive economic growth during the Venetian period and by the end of the Venetian occupation many local people had had the opportunity to study at Italian universities, which lead to growth in the fields of all the Arts in Crete, including architecture, literature, theatre and painting.
Location:
Rethymno stands on the North coast of Crete midway between the cities of Heraklion and Chania. It is easily accessed from the main trunk road which runs from East to West Crete. It also provides easy access to the South coast via the road through Spili.
